With summer fast approaching and the loosening of lockdown restrictions, we’ll soon be able to enjoy some garden entertaining, hosting BBQs and appreciating outdoor gatherings again.
As the weather improves, we’ll be spending more time outside, so now is the perfect time to get your gardens, balconies and terraces ready.
With a little imagination, it’s possible to turn even the most basic of outdoor spaces into a little slice of paradise that’ll prepare your garden for summer. So, read on for our top tips for making the most of your outdoor nooks!
1. Find your furniture
The first thing to think about when preparing for a garden party is, where is everybody going to sit?
Larger terraces and gardens can make the most of their space with a full dining table and chairs - or choose a bench seat for a modern twist. Acacia is an excellent material for outdoor furniture as it’s extremely durable and weather resistant, but if you’d prefer to store your furniture during the winter months there are plenty of folding options which look great when set out and accessorised with summer tableware. A charming bistro-style set will suit smaller patios and balconies for a more intimate setting.
If a formal dining space isn’t your cup of tea, why not think about a collection of loungers and chairs around a central fire pit or coffee table? Coordinate your set with matching materials or mix and match colours and textures for a more bohemian feel.
Top Tip: If you have a sturdy ceiling on a balcony or terrace, hanging chairs are great way to make a statement in a small space.

2. Outdoor Rugs
Just as indoor rugs can frame a room and add depth to your interior design, an outdoor rug can finish your garden or terrace look too.
Outdoor tables and dining spaces look great with a rug underneath to add definition to the space and can be a great way to segment your space into different ‘zones’.
Subtle designs and colours really set off lush garden spaces with riotous plants and flowers, while simple balconies or patios can be given an exotic, dramatic touch with rich colours and exotic foliage patterns.
For a relaxed vibe, setting up a large outdoor rug with cushions, throws and blankets can create a charming space for lazy summer days with friends or a romantic space for an evening with that special someone.
Top Tip: Rugs are a clever way to decorate your garden for summer, so why not find games or other entertaining ideas from there?
3. Set the tone with lighting
When we think of evenings spent relaxing outside with friends and family, we never picture that scene in the dark, do we? Lighting is an essential tool for creating a warm, inviting outdoor space for your garden party. The kind of lighting you choose depends on your overall style preference, but don’t be afraid to experiment with different looks and designs.
Large storm lanterns are a great way to introduce the evocative play of candlelight to your garden (while protecting delicate flames from the wind). Fill them with large church candles and surround the base with colourful pebbles or other outdoor accessories that will look great both day and night.
String lights create a truly magical feel that’s perfect for hosting garden parties. You can even hang balloons or paper lanterns from the light string to add a personal touch. For paths or flower beds, individual lamps or lanterns illuminate your favourite aspects of the garden and guide your visitors. These come in all shapes and sizes so you can really make a feature of your garden lighting.
Top Tip: Solar lights recharge automatically for a charming style that doesn’t require an outdoor socket.

4. Outdoor decoration
So, you’ve got your table and chairs set up, but your terrace still looks a bit bleak and uninviting. How do you get that ‘magazine spread’ look? Lighting and rugs add dimensions to your decor, but accessories and other decoration is what truly makes your outdoor space into a place everyone will want to hang out.
If you have plenty of space to spare, adding additional furniture such as wooden screens or outdoor sideboards gives you different height levels on which to hang plants, show off pots or place lanterns. Storage trunks also offer additional seating and storage to keep your smaller accessories or outdoor cushions safely stowed away when not in use.
Texture is a key element to consider when adding the finishing touches to your outdoor space. Cushions, throws and blankets all create a cosy, inviting atmosphere and turn basic wooden chairs into comfortable seats to settle in for the evening.
Sometimes it’s good to think outside the box too; your garden might be full of real plants but show-stopping faux plants with bright blooms or exotic foliage can add a year-round splash of colour to your outdoor space.
Top Tip: If your garden furniture is fairly neutral, accessories such as plant pots can be a great way to bring a splash of colour to your space.
5. Be the hostess-with-the-mostest
Once the stage is set, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Whether your garden table is on trend or looking a bit tired and worn, the right tableware will have your guests clamouring to steal your secrets.
First, consider whether you need a tablecloth. Your table on its own with place settings might look fabulous, but if you’re concerned about an older table, or about protecting your furniture from stains, then investing in a stylish tablecloth can make all the difference.
A plain tablecloth can really set off bright, colourful or patterned tableware for a polished and sophisticated look - or make the tablecloth your statement piece and tone down its bold look with simple white crockery for a finish that’s both classic and contemporary.
Finally, consider your garden party glassware. You might prefer a more durable material than glass in your garden, but there are plenty of stunning plastic glasses which look just as classy as the real thing. Look for textured effects, smoked or coloured finishes and sculpted designs to make a real statement.
