How to wear winter florals

We often associate fresh floral prints with the warmer seasons – sweet spring dresses and strappy summer tops adorned with sunflowers, daisies and roses were key pieces in our wardrobe this year. But although we see fewer flowers in nature during the colder months, that doesn’t mean they should go missing from our clothes.

Winter florals have been slowly making moves in the fashion world for the last few years. The concept of a dark background with bright floral print is not a new one, but until quite recently it’s been reserved for dull wedding guest dresses and cosy flannel pyjamas. In 2019, though, the trend started gaining pace within stylish circles as a whole host of designers sent frosty florals down their catwalks – from Alexander McQueen to Christian Dior, suddenly these understated blooms were everywhere.

At La Redoute, we take a lot of inspiration from the streets of Paris – and dark and moody floral is a look the French j’adore. Summer florals have a pretty femininity, but winter florals are edgy and dramatic. They have that rocky vibe that can be dressed up or down so easily – think floaty floral dresses layered up with chunky knitwear and boots, or paired back with sheer tights and strappy shoes for your winter social life.

If there’s one piece you need to add to your wardrobe this season, it’s a floral. Take a look at our top picks and how to wear them.

The dark floral dress

This dress is the ultimate hardworker – it’ll take you from office to party to wedding to weekend without fail. The deep navy background sets off the rich red and pink flowers perfectly, and we just love those added details in the lace edging, delicate buttons and nipped in waist.

For a casual date night look, pair it with slouchy knee high boots, a colour pop belt and a denim jacket.

For a winter wedding, we love these coordinated dusky pink mules with some dainty jewellery and a clashing clutch bag.

And for the office, throw on this oversized blazer.

The fresh floral skirt

We love everything about this sweet skirt – the rich colours work so perfectly together and it’s the ideal floaty fit for a smart/casual look.

Style it up for a weekend brunch catch-up with a sage green chunky knit jumper, a leopard print beret and Chelsea boots.

For a smarter dinner and drinks vibe, this navy blue, lace trim cami works well with a cardigan over the shoulders and some block court heels.

And if you’re feeling a bit sporty, we’re loving this skirt paired with a colour co-ord cropped hoodie, classic Cons and a cross body bag.

The simple floral shirt

If you prefer a more monochrome style, this stylish shirt combines the winter florals trend with a simple black and white palette. Perfect for work and play alike, with a relaxed shape that pairs perfectly with sharp tailoring.

For that important staff meeting (whether it’s on Zoom or IRL), team with a leather pencil skirt, sheer spotty tights, pointy-toed ankle boots and a breezy earth-toned scarf.

Winter florals can be high fashion, too – by matching this monochrome shirt with a colour pop suit co-ord, you’ll create the kind of super chic look that’s right at home in stylish circles. This oversized jacket and loose fit trousers add a statement shade… and these cherry red heels complete the look!
