Storage Solutions to Declutter Your Life

They say a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind! When your possessions are scattered, it’s more than just a mess and can lead to distraction, stress, and a decrease in productivity. As we start the New Year, there’s no better time to reclaim your space, simplify your surroundings, and set the intention for a more organised, focused, and calm year ahead. Ready to transform your rooms and mindset? Let’s dive in!

Benefits of organising your home space

Psychologically, organising your space better reduces anxiety and improves your mind. Organising your space also:

  • Saves time by making sure everything is where it should be when you need it.

  • Saves even more time by making it easier to clean, because everything is put away.

  • Reduces stress and improves sleep, especially in the bedroom.

  • Saves money by reducing the risk of repurchasing an item because you need it and can't find it.

  • Provides an opportunity to add interesting storage items to your space, supporting your aesthetic.

Different types of storage solutions

Storage solutions come in a variety of different types to suit your needs, space, aesthetics, and budget.

Storage furniture

If space is tight, look for multi-functional storage solutions. Sideboards are back in style and provide space to show off your plants and other home accessories. Dressers look great and also allow you to show off your favourite pieces. You can also opt for an open display area that appears to offer more space, or a sideboard unit with enclosed storage above.

Bedrooms are particularly important to keep clutter free. A good chest of drawers still works well, while a tallboy is great for small bedrooms with very limited space. Also consider a bedside table with drawers. If you don't have a wardrobe, a modular dresser provides some hanging space. For the bathroom, you can't go wrong with a vanity chosen to match your decor, whether wrapped around the sink or standing alone.

Shelving

Traditional shelving still has its place, especially for storing things you need to access quickly. You can also combine it with drawers in a storage bookcase or compartment storage unit.

For very limited space, consider a wall shelving unit that frees up floor space. Bookcases don't need to be just used for books, either. Sofa shelving units are designed to fit around your living room furniture and put things like books and magazines within easy reach. If putting shelving in the bathroom, make sure to choose items designed for bathroom use as they can take the moisture.

Boxes and baskets

If you are storing items you routinely need to move from room to room, such as toys or laundry, boxes and baskets are a great choice. Baskets and woven boxes fit well with a more rustic decor. Metal crates are tough and can often be stacked – very functional if you have kids! For the bedroom, choose boxes or baskets designed to fit under the bed, allowing you to maximise your space.

Whatever storage solution you choose, you can blend it in with the rest of your room. Choose storage furniture that serves multiple purposes or keeps everything together, shelving to display options, or boxes and baskets to provide portable solutions.
