What makes a great outfit for a teacher

Comfort before all else. You need to start with what feels good and outfits that you will still be happy in after seven hours of teaching. You need to be able to move, especially if teaching younger kids, which means movement-friendly styles and stretch fabrics. And, of course, you want breathable fabrics that will help you stay at the right temperature.

Layer up for classroom climates. We all know that one room can feel like Siberia while another feels like a Roman bath. Layers let you adapt instantly. Choose durable, easy-to-clean pieces, especially important when working with younger kids. And always prioritise comfortable shoes; your feet will thank you when you’re up at the blackboard.

Stay professional, but show your personality. Neutral tones and subtle patterns keep the focus on your teaching rather than your outfit, but don’t shy away from a splash of colour, bright touches can delight younger students. Resist the temptation to “dress cool” for teenagers; your wardrobe should say teacher, not student.

Here are some do's and don't's:

Do:

  • Wear comfortable shoes with good support

  • Layer for variable classroom temperatures

  • Choose breathable fabrics that move with you

  • Add touches that reflect your personality

  • Keep it professional

Don't:

  • Wear dry-clean only outfits

  • Attempt to be "cool" or keep up with the teenagers

  • Wear ill-fitting or worn-out clothing

With these tips, you’ll feel confident, comfortable, and ready to teach in style every day.

Everyday outfit ideas for teachers

Casual chic

Most teachers want to be professional but, at the same time, not look like they're working in an office. Midi skirts are very popular right now, especially with knitted tops. Consider cardigans as well as jumpers. A cardigan can be left open to provide an extra "semi-layer" in awkward temperatures. Alpaca mix is warm, fashionable, and not as expensive as you might think.

Another option is a nice set of trousers with a blouse. Two looks are particularly fashionable, wide leg and cigarette, with ankle grazing trousers also being popular. We recommend trainers for teachers because they are comfortable and offer plenty of support; if you're going for ankle grazing trousers, you might want high tops, like these Chuck Taylor trainers. Choose blouses that aren't going to be distracting, like our striped cotton blouse with a Victorian collar. Consider the weather and your school's temperature when choosing sleeve lengths, and you can always throw a cardigan on as well.

Cardigans also go well with a simple dress, and the combination can look very sharp and professional. A t-shirt dress allows you to cool off, while adding layers as needed.

Business casual

If your school is a little more formal, you may want to go with full business casual. This is also a good look for things like district meetings and patient teacher conferences. At this point blazers are your friend. They look good, tend to be comfortable, and can easily be removed as needed, as well as fitting nicely under a winter coat. Wear one over a plain t-shirt for a lighter, more casual look.

Smart trousers are another key part of business casual. They might go with a blazer and / or a button-down shirt. Again, go for more neutral colours if you can, but don't be afraid to add a splash here and there.

A good midi shift dress is another versatile option. This corduroy dress is a really fun variation on the theme. It really needs boots to finish it off...if you go that way, make sure they are comfortable, even if you don't plan on being in the classroom that day.

Comfortable outfits for long days

We keep coming back to comfort, but if you aren't comfortable, you can't teach well. Your days are long, temperatures change, and you have to be able to move. Stretch fabrics are great here. Avoid skinny jeans or anything that restricts your movement. Make sure you can do everything you need to do, especially if it involves herding younger kids.

Layered tops help you control your temperature. It's perfectly fine to just pop on a tee under everything else as a base layer you can safely strip down if you need to. Just make sure it's cotton; you need breathability. Some teachers also like to wear slogan tees the kids might find amusing.

Above all, supportive shoes. Trainers or loafers are often the best, but make sure that whatever you wear, if you end up on your feet for hours you’ll be comfortable.

For a perfect teacher outfit, pair a comfortable neutral top with flexible bottoms and supportive shoes, then layer with a cardigan or blazer to adapt to changing classroom temperatures. It’s professional, practical, and ready for anything.

You might need to change your style throughout the year. Think not just about the temperature and your comfort, but about the mood and energy of the time.

Spring

Spring calls for light layers and pastel colours. Butter yellow is particularly en vogue right now, although chasing trends can cause you to end up left behind. Make sure the fabrics you use are breathable.

If you’re not wearing trainers, choose nice, comfortable flats or loafers that aren’t too heavy for the year.

Floral midi skirts look great if you really want to get into the spirit of the season. If that's too busy for you, consider cropped or ankle grazing trousers, and don't forget the cardigan for those cooler days.

Summer

Linen is one of the best fabrics for summer, and choose a base layer that is sleeveless, such as a sleeveless dress or top. Come July, you will be wishing for it.

Sandals are cool, but keep in mind they may not be suitable for all schools or all roles. If you can't wear sandals, go for breathable tennis shoes or mesh fabric trainers. These will protect your feet but still allow you to breathe. Avoid leather trainers, which can get too hot.

Autumn

Autumn often comes with fluctuating and awkward, in between temperatures. A blazer or lightweight jacket becomes particularly valuable. Go with autumn leaf hues such as rust, olive, burgundy, and brown. You want to get into the feel of the season.

Ankle boots come into their own here, as do high top trainers. Chelsea boots are often comfortable and supportive, and have the advantage of not needing to be laced. Whatever you choose, though, make sure you are comfortable standing and walking.

Winter

Winter is often the heart of the school year, and also a time for both rest and restlessness. A warm wool turtleneck paired with a midi skirt and a blazer is one great option, as are corduroy trousers and a sweater. If you’re wearing a skirt, consider wearing tights under it and/or longer boots.

Our high neck cable knit jumper looks great with contrasting corduroy trousers and boots or trainers. You can wear a lighter layer underneath in case the heat is turned up a little high.

Or even combine the two concepts with a corduroy skirt with a long-sleeved shirt, blazer, and boots. Great ways to stay warm without looking too bundled up.

Don't forget the warm, fluffy socks.

Back-to-school outfit ideas for teachers

Going back to school can be a bit intimidating, even for teachers. Whether you’re meeting a brand new set of students or reconnecting with returning ones, you want to make sure you’re dressing to boost both your confidence and theirs. Plus, you’ll likely run into new parents or colleagues, so dressing up a little bit more for that first impression can go a long way.

Here are some outfit ideas that will help you look professional, feel comfortable, and be ready to take on a new school year:

  • Tailored dress with a cardigan: a tailored dress paired with a cardigan is always a classic first-day choice. It's polished yet comfortable, and perfect for those days when you want to look put-together but still have the freedom to move.

  • Ankle-grazing trousers with a blouse: a pair of ankle-grazing trousers combined with a flowy blouse is a great option for a versatile, stylish outfit. Opt for neutral tones or soft pastels to keep things professional, or go for a bolder pattern if you want to add some flair. Pair this look with a nice pair of loafers for a chic but comfortable outfit.

  • Layered outfits for fluctuating temperatures: September can bring all sorts of weather, and as a teacher, you'll often experience both chilly mornings and warmer afternoons. Dressing in layers is essential. Consider a light jacket or a blazer that you can easily remove when things warm up.

Teacher outfits for different roles

Here's a little more detail on teacher outfits for different roles.

Primary school teachers

Teaching younger kids means you’ll be on the move, crouching down, or dealing with messy activities. Wear durable, easy-to-move-in clothes that don’t require hand washing or dry cleaning. Comfortable trainers are a must, and skirts are best avoided. Opt for soft trousers and knit tops that allow flexibility and layers to stay ready for anything.

High school teachers

For high school, aim for a polished, structured look with smart-casual dresses and blazers. While you don’t need to follow every trend, adding a fashionable colour or accessory can keep your style current. Comfortable shoes are key for standing in front of the class, but stay classy, remember, you’re an authority figure.

Active roles (PE, art, music)

If you’re teaching PE, art, music, or anything else that requires less talking and more doing, then you need practical and casual clothing. Tees come in here a lot, along with joggers and tracksuits. Don't forget those layers. This Adidas tracksuit is a great option with trainers and a casual or plain tee underneath.

Music teachers can be a little bit more formal. Art teachers? You are also in the firing line of messy projects, so consider that and make sure everything you wear can easily be machine washed.

Teacher outfit ideas for men

No, guys, we haven't forgotten you. Men often have an easier time with fashion, as men's fashion changes less. And a lot of what we say about being professional and not too cool applies for you too.

Chinos are great with button-down shirts. Our chinos come in other colours as well as beige, navy, and black, and have a comfortable fit. Oxford shirts are fashionable right now and definitely professional enough for the high school classroom. Alternatively, pair smart trousers or even nice jeans with knitwear. Don't forget layers, and it's fine to wear a plain tee as a base layer. Get the short sleeves ready for summer.

Comfortable loafers are good, trainers are even better if appropriate to your school. Primary school teachers should definitely go with trainers if possible.

So, while there’s a lot to consider, it all comes down to this: teachers need to look professional while staying comfortable. Supportive shoes and practical layers are the most important elements, helping you stay focused and comfortable throughout the day. La Redoute offers a wide range of fashionable, affordable options designed with teachers in mind.
