This cold weather gives us the perfect excuse to hibernate away in front of the TV, but there’s only so many times we can watch The Wedding Planner.

If you fancy spreading your cultural wings without leaving the sofa, here are five French films you can watch even if you don’t speak the language.

1. Blue Is The Warmest Colour

A romantic coming-of-age story that follows 15 year-old Adele as she navigates high school, her first relationship and meeting the love of her life – Emma.


2. Amélie

After a restrictive childhood, Amélie moves to Paris to work as a waitress and after helping reunite a customer with a lost treasure, decides to devote her life to the people around her.


3. The Untouchables

Philippe is an aristocratic quadriplegic; Driss is unemployed and looking for work. Driss becomes Philippe’s carer, moves into his mansion and changes his life forever.


4. Girlhood

To escape her controlling parents, sexist neighbourhood and dead-end school, Marieme changes her name and her dress code and drops out of school to join a gang of free-spirited girls.


5. The Artist

Set in the 20s, silent movie actor George meets a dancer called Peppy. Her star begins to rise, but the introduction of talking pictures has the opposite effect on George’s career.
