Creating a festive Christmas house display couldn’t be easier than raiding your recycling to create something pretty and festive and a bit eco-friendlier this year. The great thing is you can make as many houses as you like and get creative with the design on each. Adding lights inside adds that extra festive touch too.
Here’s how to make them:
A craft knife and mat
White paint pen
Glue or a glue gun
Find yourself some cardboard. I used old packaging sheets destined for the recycling. The thicker the cardboard the harder it will be to cut so it needs to be thin but study enough to stand up.
Make yourself some house templates out of paper. I just drew a few different sizes and shapes that would fit on my shelf and include flaps in your design for gluing together.
Trace around your templates on to the reverse side of your cardboard. Trace both with the flaps folded in and folded out. I created a 3-sided template and then just drew around the larger house piece again to create the 4th house side.
Using a cutting mat and a knife or good sharp scissors cut out all your cardboard houses being sure to cut out neatly around the flaps. Using a knife or the edge of scissors score along the creases of the houses and along the flaps. Don’t cut all the way through just enough to help you fold in the flaps.
Draw out your house decoration with a pencil including windows and doors. Make each house different and don’t get too detailed as it will be extremely hard to cut. Using a craft knife cut out everything you’ve drawn like the windows carefully.
Using a white paint pen embellish your houses with designs around the windows and doors including hearts and scrolls.
Fold all your houses into their 3D shape and fold the flaps down. Run glue along the side flap and glue the house sides together. Repeat for all your houses.
Then cut a rectangle out of card to create the roofs. Allow an overhang on each side of the house in your measurements. Draw different tile designs on each of these using your paint pen, try brick designs or scallop shapes.
Apply glue to the house roof flaps and glue on the roof, one side at a time. Hold till the glue has set.
Arrange your houses on your shelves or fireplace for a fun Christmas display. Add fairy lights or strip led lights inside for a pretty glow through the windows at night.
