Maximising your spare room space by @bangonstyle

Debs Stubbington of Bang On Style is an avid DIY fan, with an eye for detail and a creative touch. Her rented apartment in Essex is a credit to her personal style, which is all about gentle neutrals with interesting textures and stylish finishing touches. Here, she tells us how to make the best use of a spare room.

How to style your spare room

The spare room is an incredible asset in any house. An extra space that can be used for guests as well as storage, but often they can be smaller than the main bedroom. Here are some ways to maximise what space you do have in your spare room as well as making its look super chic.

I love La Redoute and it is always my go to for stylish, well-built pieces of furniture as well as those finishing touches like rugs and bedding.  My spare room already featured several La Redoute items which I loved, so I immediately turned to them for furniture pieces that would help make the space look as large as possible.

The bed is the centre of the room and a piece of furniture that will inevitably take up the most space. The Anda Oak bed has an open headboard which allows you to see through to the wall, this means it’s less dominating than a bed with a solid headboard. Its height not only means there is plenty space underneath for storage, but the more floor you can see, the larger the room will feel.

Choose versatile furniture

This theory also extends to the bedside table. By choosing a tall bedside table with slim legs you will create a feeling of space. Choosing to use one bedside table will also save lots of space and a folding chair can act as a great second table if needed, whilst leaning up against the wall when not in use. Versatile pieces matter in smaller spaces, and you could also add a mirror with an inclusive shelf like the Zemba Metal mirror for guests to place items on before bed.

Pick the best bedroom lighting

To maximise the space on your bedside table how about trying a wall mounted light instead of a classic table lamp. Placed directly over the bedside table one of these will not only provide light but some interest to the wall. Even in a rented property like mine these kinds of lights can be used by adding a battery powered light inside, so no rewiring is involved.

On the opposite side of the bed a floor lamp will not only act as a bedside light but add some extra lighting in the room. This Sophonie Marble Floor lamp has a narrow base and shade so can be placed in tight corners without taking up much space but creates a lovely cosy feel when lit.

Accessorise the spare space

When choosing curtains, light fabrics like linen will keep the window area bright but these Oderie linen curtains are lined with blackout fabric so they will still make the room nice and dark at night. Avoid choosing floor length curtains as again, seeing the floor will create a feeling of space and stop the window being too dominated.

To add some print to the room, try a patterned duvet set. This stunning Palmeira duvet cover and matching pillowcases features a jungle design in black and cream, which adds some much-needed pattern to my spare room but also is still light and bright. I also love how the black trim ties in with lots of the elements in the room.

Items like the Aftas rug tucked halfway under the bed and the Izolia Dame-Jeanne glass vase filled with pampas grass add the finishing touches to the room. My spare room now not only feels so much larger, but its chicer than a top hotel. I can’t wait to welcome some guests to stay now!!
