How To Decorate With Neutrals

Warm neutrals are trending in 2021, with colour trends drifting away from cool-toned greys and gravitating towards beiges, taupes, milky creams and warm whites. Neutral is not synonymous with boring, when done right, styling with neutral decor and furniture made from natural materials can inject a lot of warmth, dimension and personality into a room. One of the benefits of a neutral interior theme is that your home will always look timeless, sophisticated and inviting. Here are my recommendations on how to decorate with neutrals like a pro.

Keep your foundation simple

When picking out the largest pieces of furniture in your room, it’s best to pick minimal designs in colours of white, cream, tan or black as these will act as your foundation. When you have a blank canvas to decorate you can easily add more interest and colour with throws, cushions and vases. Start big and work your way down to the smallest decor pieces as the final step. For the bedroom, this contemporary style Anda Solid Oak Bed will see you through the next decade and complement many interior design trends and match bedding of any colour. Large wool rugs are often expensive, so depending on your budget an oversized 100% natural jute rug is a more affordable option as the perfect neutral base for your room. The dining table is often the heart of the home, where many conversations and memories take place, I love this elegant Malu Rectangular Dining Table in polished pine that gives both a rustic and elevated look.

Mix & match natural materials

Hand-woven rugs, bleached rattan, braided baskets, knitted throws, washed linen, wicker lamp shades – when it comes to neutrals, the more texture, the better! Mixing and matching different patterns, materials and fibres will create more visual interest throughout your home and sticking to a neutral colour palette makes styling a dream. A Washed Linen Duvet Cover is light and cool for those warm summer nights and looks effortlessly styled with this Hand Embroidered Cotton Throw with fringe edging. Layer up your sofa with various textured cushions like macramé, pom poms & tassels.

Break up the beige with black

An easy way to avoid making your room appear washed out and flat is by adding some contrasting black to offset the 50 shades of beige. Having contrast in your space is key to having an impactful design. This Cara Metal and Cane Table Lamp creates a modern juxtaposition with a solid black base and contrasting black trim framing the light rattan. Go for bold black accessories like this Sira Decorative Ceramic Vase and Sensu Fan Wall Decoration that will create talking points for visitors and visibly stand out against white walls.

Neutrals aren’t just black and white

Don’t limit yourself to only using achromatic colours like black and white as there is a wide palette of colourful neutral hues to pick from. Most neutral colours take their inspiration from nature - like sage greens found in forests, sandy beach tones and deep rusts in the desert. You can have as much fun as you like with different neutral colours and it will still look cohesive with different neutral shades working harmoniously together. Get ready for your next dinner party with this Linen Table Cloth in a brilliant shade of Ochre, layered with woven placemats for a chic bohemian look. If a particular combo of colours works well in nature, as a rule of thumb it’ll look just as good in your home too.

Add life to your space

Make your interiors feel alive with plants and flowers, the perfect complement to a neutrally decorated room. If you don’t have a green thumb or can’t be bothered with the extra admin that comes with looking after plants, dried Pampas Grass and Eucalyptus are my go-to for adding an organic element to your home. La Redoute also have a realistic range of artificial plants, including an incredibly aesthetically pleasing Faux Fiddleleaf Fig Tree – a plant which normally is notoriously difficult to keep alive.
