One of our favourite Interior Editors, Ciara Elliot, creates interesting and compelling content for Instagram and magazines. Here, for the La Redoute hub, she shows how to bring the personal touch to the home with quirky and novel pieces that lift the mood and reflect your personality.
NOVELTY AND QUIRK
As if in reaction to the Scandinavian minimalism we’ve all been so beholden to, quirky and irreverent objects such as pineapples, cacti and bird shapes have been cropping up between the pages of the best interior design magazines for a few seasons now. Whether it is a dog in a tuxedo painting or a moose head for the wall, unexpected items that stand out and create a talking point are becoming more and more sought after for the home.
What began as a style statement to counter minimalism has now become one of the latest interior design trends
Here are a few of my favourite pieces using the Novelty and Quirk trend:
1. Be adventurous with shades and shapes
2. Get creative with ornaments
This cactus looks great in any children’s bedroom. I have had one in my now 11-year old-daughter Astrid’s room for years and we still love it.
3. Make a simple statement
There’s an ethnic feel to this lamp which I think would add personality to any desk space or bedside table.
4. Compliment the space with ornate sculptures
You have to love a mini naked sculpture sitting casually on a bookshelf to emanate all the art gallery feels.
5. Find a place for abstract dimensions
You don't just have to decorate your walls - think of hanging some art from the ceiling too. I love a suspended mobile and this one is the perfect side of chic.
6. Add a touch of luxe and glamour
7. Use fun objects as a focal point
