Interiors editor Ciara Elliott loves to use colour in her beautiful home, and her expertise means she really understands how to work earthy shades together to create a calm and peaceful space. Here she shows us how to utilise mustard, a key trend for the season.
HOT LIKE MUSTARD
I love that for the first time in many years stand-out hues are taking over from greys and neutrals, and in interiors that goes for fabric, paint, furniture and accessories choices too. If you are going for a new look, there’s nothing that’s going to give you the same optimistic burst of colour of than a sunny yellow. Mustard is a key colour in interiors this year - think shades of turmeric, ochre and saffron that make this earthy, bold colour works as well with base hues of pink, ambers and creams as it does teamed with natural materials such as leather, rattans and bamboo. For a touch of cheeky festive luxe, this versatile shade can even work against gold and bronze. Whether you go for a stand-out piece of furniture (I do love a yellow sofa) or introduce pops of yellow with accessories, mustard will add an an immediate lift to any space.
Here are a few of my favourite pieces from the Mustard Trend:
1. Dried flowers
I’m a massive fan of dried flowers and these stems would create instant wow in a hallway.
2. Pendant lights
I adore this tasselled pendant ceiling light and have used one in recently in our revamped dressing room.
3. Storage baskets
These mustard yellow baskets are perfect for storing make-up, cotton wool and other smellies in the bathroom. I also think you could pop some bare plant pots in there to add a shot of colour to a plant shelf.
4. Rattan wardrobes
This rattan wardrobe feels wonderfully fresh and cool, but has a nod to a hippy bohemian past.
5. Glamours bedside lamps
Bring your mustard look up a notch with this glamorous bedside lamp.
6. Wooden wall hooks
These natural wood wall hooks are so handy to add hanging space to a modular wardrobe. I have used them in my own wardrobe revamp.
7. Quirky prints
I love this fun ‘Here Comes the Sun’ print which encapsulates so much of what this sunny, optimistic about mustard.
