If like the rest of us, you embarked upon a new fitness regime in January, you might find that by now you’re flagging a bit (we are). However, creating a long-lasting fitness routine isn’t about choosing the hardest thing you can think of and working towards achieving it. Instead, it’s about cultivating healthy new habits, taking them one step at a time, and feeling fabulous while you do it.
Read on for our top tips, favourite activewear products and some inspirational quotes to help you nurture your new habit.
Leggings
An activewear staple, leggings are the go-to choice for most of us for workouts - and they’re gaining favour as workwear, too! Choose supportive and opaque fabrics (the last thing you want is to feel self-conscious when you’re working out) - and why not throw in a pattern or two for a bit of feel-good factor?

Top Tip: It takes 21 days of following a routine to create a new habit. This is the perfect time to start a new one, whether it’s reminding yourself to drink more water or to take regular breaks from sitting at your desk.
Activewear Tops
There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a top for your workout. Some people prefer tanks, others tees, and some like long sleeves. Before you choose, think about the kind of activity you’re doing and what has worked well for you. For example, for a yoga class you might prefer something loose and comfortable, but for a high-octane HIIT class something more form-fitting might give you a greater range of movement.

Sports Bras
The nemesis of every busty girl, finding the right sports bra can feel like an uphill battle. The trick is to measure yourself properly at home so you can make sure you order the perfect size. It’s also a good idea to order a few different styles so you can try them on in the comfort of your own home and find what works best for you. Pop them on, have a little jump and a jiggle, and find the perfect sports bra to keep you secure and comfortable while you’re working out

Top Tip: Tracking your progress is a great way to stay motivated. You can use an app or digital tracker - but a pen and paperwork just as well.
Sweatshirts
You might be hot and sweaty at the moment, but after your workout, the last thing you want to do is cool down too fast. Although our days are (finally!) warming up a bit, evenings are still cool so having a sweatshirt or hoodie on hand is essential. While figure-hugging long-sleeved tops look great, for us there’s nothing quite like diving into a big, comfy hoodie. Even without the workout!

Jackets
While of course, a jacket can fulfil a similar role as a jumper or hoodie, the addition of a sports jacket can also help you upgrade your activewear to athleisure - perfect if you’re going straight from the gym to the school run, for example. Choose a stylish jacket with a flattering cut and a neat finish for a polished look (though sadly even the best of jackets won’t cure the flushed cheeks and ‘glow’. We’ve tried).

Top Tip: Everything is better with the company. Why not get your friends and family involved so you can all encourage and support each other?
Swimwear
Swimming is an amazing way to stay active, as it’s low impact so it’s great for people who struggle with joint pain or for whom repetitive exercises like running are problematic. If you’re swimming for fitness, we recommend setting aside your stylish string bikini and choosing something a little more supportive. Full swimsuits are usually de rigueur for doing lengths, but there are some great fitness two-pieces around, too.

Trainers
Choosing the right pair of trainers can be difficult; particularly if you like to do a lot of different activities. Trainers that are great for running in can be less than helpful for lifting weights, for example. The best way to test new trainers is to try them in the comfort of your own home. Wear them around the house, do some squats, make sure they’re the right fit for you. Remember, for fitness shoes you may need to go up half a size to give your feet room to move and expand.

Top Tip: You’re not going to stick with something you hate. Find an activity that puts a smile on your face and you’ll be far more likely to do it regularly.
Trackers & Watches
Although some people prefer to keep things analogue, tracking your fitness digitally has never been easier thanks to the vast collections of smartwatches and fitness trackers available. Most will sync to apps on your phone so you can keep track of your activities, your goals and monitor your improvements and successes as you go along.

Headphones
If you’re anything like us, distraction is often a very necessary part of the exercise! Headphones give you the chance to escape by listening to your favourite tunes or podcast and taking your mind off any discomfort. Music in particular is great for helping you to get in the zone. Choose wireless headphones with over-ear loops for the most secure fit during exercise.

Top Tip: It’s important to remember to reward yourself. If you’ve hit all your targets this week, treat yourself with a day off, a glass of wine or a takeaway. You deserve it!
Bags
An often overlooked, but essential piece of activewear kit - is the bag. Choose a larger tote to keep your gym kit neat and secure or opt for a rucksack so you can carry what you need on the move. With different styles and shapes available, you’re bound to find the perfect design for your chosen activity.
