It's now seen regularly on runways and TikTok, and it’s definitely not a faux pas, but you have to do it right.

Double denim: the golden rules

Yes, there are rules for wearing denim on denim. While we’re all for personal style, this is one look that benefits from a bit of strategy. Get it right, and you’ll look effortlessly sleek and modern. Get it wrong, and it might seem like you grabbed every denim piece you own in a panic. Denim is timeless and versatile, but it should always look intentional - not accidental.

Keep classic pieces in your wardrobe. Jeans can be dressed up or dressed down, and baggier styles are in right now, although you can keep the love for the skinnies too. Denim shirts are also great for rocking the double denim look.

Here are four simple rules to follow for how to style double denim and make your outfit a real winner.

1. Stick to similar washes

This doesn't mean you should be going for acid wash from head to toe or dark denim universally. However, if you wear, for example, a black denim jacket with light blue jeans, then nobody can tell you're doing the double denim thing - and what's the point of that? It can also look disjointed if not balanced properly. Instead, choose pieces with similar colours and washes to create a more cohesive style.

This doesn't mean matching is mandatory. As long as you do it with intention, contrast stitching and tonal variations can work. Also, two-tone denim pieces or patchwork styles break this rule in a good way. If you do go for contrast, consider unusual denim colours that stand out, or use things other than denim to break up the colour.

2. Mix and match your shapes

While keeping the colour palette simple, experiment with different fits to add detail and drama. For example, you might want to match skinny jeans with an oversized denim shirt, or wear a fitted denim dress under a baggy jacket. Add a belt to bring oversized and baggy pieces under control and on trend. Baggier jeans might go with a tighter shirt or well-fitted jacket. Cargo-style jeans, barrel legs, and utility-inspired fits are all very in right now. Skinny jeans and jeggings will never be completely out, but they're definitely less on trend for 2025.

A denim jumpsuit works all on its own, but you can channel early 2000s nostalgia by adding a denim hat or bag. Consider a boilersuit with flared legs instead to keep up with the current trend for a looser silhouette.

Consider your own shape and proportions when choosing fits. The right combination can highlight features you love - like your shoulders or hips - while playing down areas you might feel less confident about. For example, taller people often suit layered looks that add depth and interest.

3. Accessorise away

Head-to-toe denim can easily feel a bit blocky, so accessories are your best friend here. They help break things up and give you a chance to showcase your personal style. A vintage belt works beautifully with jeans or cinched over an oversized jacket or dress.

Heading to a festival? Try an organic cotton floral bucket hat – both sun-smart and stylish. Hats are a summer essential, so don’t leave home without one.

Footwear matters too. A pair of retro trainers can tie your whole look together and add a laid-back edge to your denim ensemble. And don’t underestimate the power of jewellery, watches, rings, necklaces – they all help guide the eye and add polish.

Go bold with statement pieces like chunky jewellery or standout belt buckles. This is your chance to inject some personality into your outfit.

4. Add bold colour

Denim outfits often sit within one colour family – especially when you're matching washes – so a bold pop of colour is a welcome way to break things up. This could be a vibrant T-shirt under a denim jacket, a zingy clutch bag or a pair of bright shoes.

Bring in pieces in butter yellow, pistachio, or coral pink, which go well with blue washes and are very on trend this year.

Don't forget your makeup. Bright red lipstick, metallic smoky eye, or rainbow manicures all look great with a simple denim style. Choose colours that highlight your complexion and hair whilst bringing brightness to your entire outfit.

Another option is to incorporate coloured denim. Red or pastel jeans are popular right now, and you can break the similar wash rule with colours that make people look twice.

You can, of course, break these rules, but think of them as guidelines to help you get the look right, or even as training wheels to get you started. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Denim-on-denim has been on the fashion radar for a while, but 2025 is giving it a fresh spin. From new silhouettes to unexpected pairings, here are a few ways to bring your look right up to date.

Channel the noughties

Denim was a key part of the 2000s, so it's a great way to rock the throwback look and incorporate that naughties vibe. It's on trend right now, with Y2K nostalgia strong on TikTok and Instagram.

Double denim corset tops and micro miniskirts are really in right now, giving you the chance to create a fresh summer look that still uses denim without overheating you.

Look for vintage appeal

Denim has been around since the 17th century, so it's easy to put together a vintage look. Some styles come in and out. Jeans will always be in style, but the popular cuts vary over time.

Consider the quintessential straight leg jeans with a sleeveless cropped denim shirt, a look which recalls 1950s France. Other newer trends include patchwork jackets and denim waistcoats.

To make your look more sustainable, hit the vintage shops for actual vintage pieces or look at brands which upcycle old denim. Care for your own denim well and you'll have your own vintage.

Wear it wide

Over the last few years, wide-leg, pale wash denim jeans have come to dominate, providing a fresh, loose, baggy silhouette. However, they're no longer alone. Cargo jeans and slouchy fits are joining them on the catwalk. Barrel jeans are also strong right now. Look for a wide-legged silhouette that suits you and your style.

Balance the wide-legged look with a cropped denim jacket or bandeau...remember the rule about mix and matching shapes!

Midi is more modern

A denim midi will really impress the fashion set. Calf-length denim styles have grown in popularity over the last few years. Mid-wash denim midi skirts have a modern vintage vibe, while darker denim looks great cinched in with a chunky belt.

If you really want head-to-toe denim, look at a longline denim dress or sleeveless midi coats. These looks are also great for transitional seasons. Pair them with chunky sandals in the summer or boots in the winter.

Quick double denim tips

Double denim doesn’t have to scream '80s throwback – it’s firmly on trend, and with the right styling, it looks anything but dated. Here are some quick-fire tips to keep your denim look fresh and fashionable:

  • Switch up the silhouette – pair a form-fitting piece with something oversized. Think skinny or straight-leg jeans with a slouchy jacket (add a belt to bring shape), or wide-leg jeans with a fitted vest, shirt or bandeau top.

  • Baggy trousers rule – wide legs, carpenter jeans, cargo cuts, parachute styles and utility denim are all in. The “workwear” vibe is having a major moment. Skinny jeans? Still wearable, but definitely less of the spotlight stealer.

  • Stick to one wash – mixing denim washes can work, but only if done with intent. For a cleaner, more modern look, stick to one wash from top to bottom.

  • Add a pop of colour – whether it’s a classic red, a burst of neon or a full-on rainbow statement, colour is your friend. Use it to add personality and contrast.

  • Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise – keep the theme going with a denim bag or bucket hat, break things up with a leather belt, and choose your shoes with care – they’ll pull the whole look together.

  • Layer in a non-denim piece – a white tee or striped knit between two denim items can break up the look and stop it feeling too heavy or blocky.
