Coming up in womenswear for 2020

If you’re anything like us, then as we hit February and Spring drifts into sight, you’ll be starting to think about adding a few subtle updates to your wardrobe (see also: running into the sun shedding winter coats and clutching at sheer fabrics and short sleeve dresses).

That in-between place between seasons can be a tricky place to hang out, and at this time of year the flux in temperatures can leave you chilly if you take the leap too soon or sweating a little more than you’d like if you dilly-dally. Our answer? Investing in transitional pieces to see you through until things get a little more predictable. Here are our tops tips on how to spend your money wisely during the seasonal gap:

One step at a time

A common mistake heading into a new season is going all in too soon. We’re often so happy to see the cloud clear and the sun start to shine that we’re packing up our chunky knits and labelling them Winter Wardrobe faster than you can say “Spring Chicken”. Take things slowly and downgrade your winter woollies one step at a time. Instead of reaching straight for a light jacket, or even… *shudder*… going without a coat, invest in a trench coat. We know by now that they’re a style staple, so what’s not to love? This year’s twist on the classic is to go khaki and we stan. Neutral, low-key and effortlessly cool, we’ll be rocking this for months.

And if the shape of a trench doesn’t work for you, look for lapels. Try them on lighter weight coats in different fabrics to see you through to summer and slip back into once Autumn sinks in – again, try khaki and deep greens to buck tradition, or experiment with a simple pattern like a monochrome Prince of Wales Check. And keep those ideas in mind if you opt to suit up, too. Tailoring is set to stay big this year and we can’t wait to don a trouser suit.

Layer up

Now is officially the humble jumper’s time to shine. You might think their place is in Autumn but buy now and your new piece will serve you for months to come. With a few precious knitwear choices in your arsenal, you can swap squinting at your weather app each morning for leaving the house with an assured spring in your step. Start by building your outfit in layers from the bottom up. There are so many gorgeous jumpers and sweaters to wriggle into and then shed when the temp starts to rise. Go feminine with a soft, cream colour and dainty sleeve detail. Style it with jeans, a trench and fur lined boots when you need that little extra warmth, or shrug off the top layer, roll up the sleeves and pair with a billowy skirt and simple flats as the year ticks on.

Bring in the brights

The first months of the year aren’t traditionally known for their colour. Shrug off the drabness and give your outfits a little lift by introducing some brighter hues piece by piece. We’re snagging an orange sweatshirt – an eye-catching, mood enhancing, comfy and transitional piece to sashay you right into SS20, via the catwalk. After all, Pantone Orange Peel stood firmly at the centre of New York Fashion Week for the Spring Summer 2020 season, and we approve.
