I always love the start of a new season – from moodboarding outfit combinations I want to try, to wishlisting things I want to buy, the process of deciding how you want to dress for the next few months is always a fun one.
It’s entirely possible to buy only a few key pieces that can be styled in multiple outfit combinations and still look stylish and on trend, so if you’re unsure what to invest in this season, here’s some inspiration…
The Everyday Boot
From western to chunky, heeled to printed, there are so many great boots out there right now and each style has its plus points. I’m pretty fussy as I need to be comfortable while rushing around day to day, so these snake print ones are the perfect – the heel height and print really elevate an outfit, but the block shape is stable enough for walking. Chunky soled boots are also a huge trend for the upcoming season – don’t be put off, they’re surprisingly flattering and easy to wear once you’re used to them! Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with a Chelsea boot – they’re classic, elegant and easy to wear with jeans, to dresses and skirts.

The Leather Trousers
If you’ve a tendency to live in jeans over autumn/winter, leather trousers are a practical yet chic alternative and offer an easy way to add an edge to any outfit. Straight shapes will go with just about everything, from blouses to jumpers, but if you’re going for skinnies, ensure you balance them out with a boxier, looser fit top or jacket and tuck into your boots. The Trench
A trench never goes out of style, but this season they’re more than just a wardrobe staple but a trend in their own right. The beauty is they work over just about everything, from a midi dress and boots to jeans and a knit, and a long one will elevate your look in a really effortless way. Stone or camel is a classic choice, but look to navy and khaki this season for a contemporary take that’s just as versatile.

The Oversized Coat
I always invest in outerwear, not just from a practicality perspective, but because a coat has the power to make or break an outfit. This season opt for boxy, oversized silhouettes and if the coat is designed to be closer fitting, then size up once or twice. Coats always look better a little bigger, plus it allows more room underneath for layering knitwear.

The Chunky Knit
Knitwear is hands down the best thing about autumn and digging out my collection of jumpers and cardis at the start of every season brings me so much joy. I’d advise buying two or three that make you feel really great – one striped one to nail French-girl chic, a plain boxy one you can chuck on with everything, and a roll neck for layering under a long coat. Just like coats, sizing up in knitwear is rarely a bad idea and will achieve a cool, laidback look.
