With winter in full swing, it’s the time of year for cosy dressing and while you may just want to wrap yourself up in a heavy parka or stay inside in your pj’s with a cup of hot chocolate, we have some tips that will help you put your winter looks together.
Some things to consider when putting your winter outfits together:
Join the boot club
Boots keep your feet warmer and, if you choose a chunky soled pair, can give you more grip when conditions are icy. Ankle boots work well with long trousers and knee-high or calf-length boots go with your winter dresses and keep your legs warm while looking sharp. Tall boots can also give a great layered effect if worn over skinny jeans or other tight trousers.
Wear shorter boots with a long coat or puffer jacket, and longer ones with a short jacket. Calf-length boots are a good compromise. Riding style boots are very in right now. Pair them with a tweed coat for the perfect ‘heritage’ look or choose Doc Martens with a traditional trench coat.
Middle layers matter
As the temperature drops, layers become important. The best middle layer is wool, cashmere, or alpaca for maximum warmth. Wear a crew neck jumper over a button down shirt with a collar for a classic look. Make sure to choose contrasting, but complimentary colours to ensure that the collar pops.
Alternatively, a turtleneck will have the same effect with your jacket, as well as keeping your neck warm on a cold and windy day. Cardigans are having a moment right now too and are a great way to add layers, texture and warmth to your looks.
Turtlenecks are one way to create a layered affect above your jacket. Another is hoodies. Wear a hooded sweatshirt with a short jacket that has a collar, with the hood available for extra warmth.
Choose weight carefully
Heavy outerwear is particularly useful if you're wearing a dress or otherwise unable to layer properly underneath. With a wool or cashmere jumper, though, a thinner coat may be all you need, allowing for a more streamlined look.
If you need a lighter look but extra warmth, consider a wool mix long coat, a lightweight padded jacket, or a sherpa coat.
Always remember that it's better to have layers, though, so you can take off a layer and still be comfortable when you’re inside.
Consider oversizing
When choosing a new winter coat, consider going for an oversized coat or just for a size larger than you would normally pick. Make sure there's space under your coat for a jumper, cardigan, or hoodie as well as a shirt. This allows space for more layers. A top tip from the Scandinavian influencers is to wear a lightweight padded jacket underneath an oversized coat to add an extra layer of cosiness.
Winter outfits are all about the combination of warmth, style, and functionality. Invest in quality outerwear, then layer and accessorise to add warmth, colour and personality – that way you’ll stay warm and stylish!
