The TikTok home hacks you need in your life

So we know TikTok has a rep for being the ‘Gen Z platform’ – it’s all incomprehensible language, complicated dances and crop tops, right? Wrong! If you can wade through the bad lip synching and OTT makeup tutorials, there’s some really useful content that applies to Millennial life – we’re talking recipes, skincare reviews and, of course, life hacks.

Life hacks have been around as long as the internet – they’re supposed to be clever, creative ways to do everyday things a bit more easily, but often they end up being super complicated and, tbh, a total waste of time. But not if you’re on TikTok! A few months ago there was a viral trend that took the platform by storm – @thelifebath from Liverpool appears on screen and says ‘show me the random life hack you saw one day that is now an unconscious standard practice in your life’. And people did! In their millions!

The video has nearly 750k likes and has been reshared countless times as people show off the life hacks that really do work. Here are some of our faves…

Removing sticky labels

We’ve all been there – you’ve just bought a lovely framed picture, a vase or in the case of this TikTok, absolutely loads of plastic tumblers, and there’s a great big sticky label right across it. Try pick it off and you’ve got an absolute nightmare that ruins the look of your lovely new things. Why do they do that?!

This clever hack from from @lexie_byers uses Sellotape to whip sticky labels off in one piece, so you’ll never be left with bits under your nails again. Love it!

Keeping Tupperware clean

If you’re a fan of leftovers, you’ll know this struggle – you make a delicious spag bol or taste chilli, with plenty leftover for the next day. You diligently pack it into a Tupperware box and pop it in the fridge… but when you’ve finally finished your food, that Tupperware is forever stained with its memory. That orange colour will never go away, no matter how many times you scrub at it or shove it in the dishwasher on ‘intensive’. Gah!

UNLESS, you use this clever hack from @adikempler. Washing up liquid, warm water, some kitchen roll, shake for 45 seconds. Clean!

Harmless hammering

This one from @adrian_mountainman_sr is less a hack more just… knowing how to use stuff properly. If you’ve ever hammered a nail into a wall, you’ll know it’s a truly dangerous game. Every stroke runs the risk of banged fingers, resulting in a stream of swear words and a framed print that’ll remain on the floor for months.

But, before you give up in despair… check the head of your hammer. See that indent? It’s where the nail goes! Slot the nail in there and you don’t need to put your flinching fingers anywhere near the hammer. Cannot believe we didn’t know this sooner.

Quick and easy garlic peeling

This one from @majauncensored hurts. How long have we all spent fiddling about with the skin on a garlic clove, carefully peeling it back and trying to flick it off our fingers? Well turns out, that’s entirely unnecessary. All you do is stab a knife into the outside of a head of garlic and pull those cloves clean out. Amazing!

The pizza box trick

We all love a takeaway pizza, right? Ever wondered why the boxes have those perforated sides? It’s not (just) so you can break them down easily for your recycling… check out this hack! Remove the lid, remove the sides and your full-size pizza box becomes a smaller, full-closable box to store any leftover slices. Not that we ever have any leftover slices… but if we did, we’d be doing this hack from @nateandgran asap!
