To me, rugs are one of the most important elements of a successful interior (and exterior!) decor scheme. Every room in your home from living room to your kitchen and even outdoor spaces will benefit. Textiles, pattern, comfort and cosiness can all be easily introduced and enhanced with the simple addition of a rug.
A beautiful room or garden is all about successful layering and using textures to add interest and depth. Starting with the walls and furniture you can add layers with your lighting, accessories, and then textiles such as throws, cushions and finally rugs. These can be layered as well, why stop at one? In a few of my rooms I’ll layer multiple rugs.
A large patterned jute or seagrass rug can be softened with multiple sheepskins scattered on top or patterned Kilim style rugs can work particularly well. Don’t be scared of mixing patterns, if they are similarly tonal or keeping to a unified colour palette they can look really good. This is also a useful trick if you aren’t ready to invest in a really large rug to cover a particular space, so you can add and layer rugs over time.
When it comes to rugs, La Redoute is the worst kept secret in the interiors world. I’ve rounded up five of my favourites from their range.
I’d choose the Bala Berber style rug to add warmth and cosiness to a bedroom or living area. It’s beautifully soft to create a tactile surface on bare feet and I love how this is a traditional Berber style but with the twist of these lovely soft autumnal touches of earthy reds and pinks.
These days your outdoor space is just as important as your indoor one and for me the garden is another room. So as with indoor spaces I like to add accessories such as lanterns, ornaments and of course rugs! This Kunze indoor/outdoor rug can, as the name suggests be used inside or out. It will add a lovely touch of pattern and colour and really make your outdoor seating area feel extra welcoming. I love using outdoor rugs in kitchens too as they are easy to wipe down and keep clean.
The Panaji hand woven jute rug is another one that would work well in a high traffic area such as a kitchen. Hardwearing jute is great for busy areas and I love the subtle colours and beautiful texture of this one.
The Rozza round rug is similar to a rug I own and I love what a statement it makes. I have mine as a focal point on the white painted floorboards in my living room and love the bohemian natural vibe it adds to an interior.
And finally my fifth pick would be the Pilar floral wool rug. I love the Scandinavian folk art style motifs and the soft colours. This would work so well in a children’s room or a living room to bring some subtle colour and pattern to a space.
