When we talk about retro interiors, we don’t mean avocado bath suites and dark wood panelling. Retro styling is a key trend for modern makeovers, and it’s all about taking inspirations from vintage pieces – think 60s rattan, 70s patterns and even a splash of 80s decadence.
Vintage magpie Joanne at @hardcastletowers created the Retro trend for us – here’s her take on it.
“The retro trend allows me to embrace my quirky, maximalist style and love of design. As long as I can remember I’ve had a love affair with vintage and retro. I think any home needs a mixture of well-loved items, things which make your heart leap when you see them, heirloom pieces which you’ll have forever and junk shop finds.”

To create that Retro vibe in your own home, keep an eye out for pieces inspired by decades gone by. Like this rounded sideboard with hairpin legs - pure sixties style with a touch of modernity, it’ll look fab with these disco-tastic cocktail glasses sitting on top.
“I’m a magpie, a collector of things; I love items which incorporate colour, pattern and texture and I like to mix it up. Pieces have to work hard to earn their place in my home. When looking for new items, I’ll be drawn to those things with a retro aesthetic and style almost by instinct, I know they’re going to fit into my space and excite me for years to come.”
Like Joanne, you can mix and match your retro pieces to create a space that draws together key trends – like this Art Deco style velvet chair paired with this psychedelic printed cushion. Love it!
