Outfit ideas for Christmas Day

It’s the most wonderful day of the year. We spend so much time preparing gifts, food, and decorations that sometimes we forget to rustle up a special outfit worthy of such a day. It’s a jolly good excuse to get all glammed up!

Since Christmas Day has so many different stages to it, it can require a military-style schedule. Ideally, you’d want two or three outfits to change into. But, let’s face it, we want to glide through our day of festivities looking sparkly yet snug, elegant but at ease, or dapper yet dressed down.

That’s why we love choosing transitional and versatile outfits that you can dress up or down throughout the day to make you feel beautiful this Christmas.

Here are 15 of our favourite outfit ideas, giving you inspiration on what to wear for Christmas Day. Combine old favourite forgotten classics with new accessories, or treat yourself to a brand new look this season!

A Seasonal Suit

Suits are a perfect choice for Christmas Day this year. Aside from the obvious benefit of you only having to pick one item, choosing one with a touch of sparkle will really add the wow factor.
Also fitting into this category, a gorgeous jumpsuit. This puff sleeved number is made with stretchy fabric - perfect for comfort after a day of indulgence!

Dress it up with some heels, or choose flatform trainers to add a bit of height without compromising your comfort.

Check Yourself

Checked fabrics and tartans are totally synonymous with the Christmas season, and if you’re wanting a casual and layered look this year, they fit the bill perfectly.

Combine a classic cable knit jumper with straight leg jeans. Your checked shacket is perfect for throwing over the top if you’re mooching down to the pub for a pre-dinner beverage!! Accessorise with bold jewellery and heeled ankle boots to add a touch of femininity.

Sparkle Away

It’s not Christmas if there isn’t a sequin dress involved, right? Whether you pick a classic black, ruby red or a festive gold, sequins are bound to be a head turner.

Opting for a long sleeved sequin dress in a looser fit means you’ll be twirling around effortlessly all day.

Complete the look with boots, tights and a jazzy hair clip.

Mrs Claus

A red power suit of your own but make it cute. Why not break out a truly festive look and wow the rest of your family? Tailor it to your own style, but we love a red co-ord teamed with a white pussy bow blouse to give all of the Mrs Claus vibes.

Or go the whole hog and add a chunky waist belt.

Gold earrings and some plain pumps will finish the look splendidly.

90’s Chanel, darling

Speaking of smart co-ords, this classy and chic 90’s tweed duo is simply perfect for a special occasion. Tweed is such a warm material, so we recommend a simple long sleeved under layer.

Once you’ve added a pair of tights and some chunky boots -  you’ll be all set. This outfit will line you up for a family photo you’re proud to feature in.

Lady In Red

We love a classic jumper dress, and it’s even better in a gorgeous festive red! Cosy yet flattering, a jumper dress is a simple all in one outfit you can throw on at the last minute and still look as though you’ve made an effort!

Keep it simple or accessorise with a belt or a gold brooch.

Go solo, pair with tights or wear over leggings for extra warmth.

“The Holiday” Look

We’ve all dreamed of being Cameron Diaz in that country cottage over the festive period! And, her cosy look is pretty timeless.

She’s often found rocking a classic cream polo neck jumper, black trousers and a pair of heels. Opting for a smart pair of trousers rather than jeans or leggings is automatically an upgrade and keeping cosy in a warm and neutral jumper means you can concentrate on adjusting your tinsel crown.

Be seeing you!

Retro Christmas Jumper

You can’t beat the classics. After all, if you can’t wear your retro Christmas jumper today, when can you? Many family traditions command matching jumpers to be worn on Christmas Day - no exceptions.

But you can still dress it up - pair with leather leggings and heels or a cute mini skirt and sparkly tights!

Pyjamas

Not planning to leave the house? Check. Planning to veg out by the fire all day with a glass of fizz? Check. Want to experience the ultimate comfort? Check.

Wearing pyjamas all day is a total win in our books, and guarantees warmth and cosiness. Whether you’re on a solo mission or want to match with your dog, there’s something special about Christmas pyjamas. Oh, and don’t forget those slippers.

Ideal for your Christmas Day outfit at home.

You might want to double check your mother-in-law isn’t popping round first, though!

Country Casual

If, like many, a Christmas day walk is front and centre on your agenda for your family you’ll need to dress for the elements. Start with your base layer of a classic crisp shirt and pair of jeans.

Add a padded gilet and a silk scarf, a wax jacket, or a warm wool pea coat if it’s cold. You don’t know what weather will show up on the day, but you do know you can have a fresh country look ready to mix and match - perfect for walking!

French Chic

Because everything looks better with a beret. Choose a checked winter skirt and pair with gorgeous knee high boots of choice. Heels or flats - both will work beautifully!

A plain cotton shirt helps the patterned skirt speak for itself. For an extra cool day, have some tights and a warm cardigan up your sleeve to adapt this outfit perfectly.

The Pre-planned present

When you get clothes or accessories as a gift, there’s just no time like the present. Whether you’ve hinted at a handbag or hoped for a hoodie, whatever you were originally wearing gets cast aside in favour of the new item. Can anybody relate?

So if you’ve been longing for loungewear this could fit your Christmas wardrobe plans nicely. Look how that worked out!

LBD

The little black dress. Goes with everything, for every occasion. For this season, opt for a long-sleeved LBD and then plot your accessories strategy.

Chunky necklace? Patterned tights and a Santa hat? A tinsel belt? Whichever look you choose; this classic piece is sure to have you feeling suitably glam for the day.

A Touch of Velvet

Who doesn’t love a bit of texture? Autumn and winter are perfect seasons to don a touch of velvet. It’s warm, shimmery and eye catching - perfect for Christmas Day.

Choose a velvet blazer and pair with matching trousers or throw it over a dress as the crowning layer. Nothing says luxury like it - just slip it off before you dine to avoid any gravy-based disasters!

Not all heroes wear Capes

When it comes to really enjoying your dinner on Christmas Day, an ideal outfit would be something warm, flowy, and not restrictive.

Enter: the cape.

Choosing a wool cape or poncho to wear for Christmas is perfect for a flattering top layer, disguising any manner of sins required. Pop it over a shirt or dress, sit back and indulge.

Hopefully your cogs are now whirring with options for your Christmas Day outfit! There are a couple of final things to remember when selecting your garments.

Firstly, consider your footwear. If your outfit is going to be set off nicely with heels, do pack an extra pair of trainers or boots. Even if you’re not planning to leave the house, it’d be just your luck that everyone votes for a pre- dinner walk at the last minute.

Next, aim to dress in layers. Traditionally December is a cold month but try not to forget that the combination of an overcrowded house, the oven being on all day and the excited flush of your Christmas sherry can mean things get warmer quickly!
