How to decorate for Autumn & Halloween

If there’s one thing we really love about the colder months, it’s getting the house all nice and cosy with seasonal updates to match our mood.

Really, why wait till Christmas to get your celebration décor up? Any excuse to decorate our house with a specific theme is fine by us - Christmas is just the tip of the iceberg!

There are opportunities for seasonal interiors all year round - think pink hearts for Valentine’s Day and pastel eggs for Easter - but of course, the autumn/winter months provide endless opportunity to bring the time of year into your home.

From pumpkins and crisp leaves to jewel tone cushions and aaaall the candles, capturing that autumnal vibe in your home is really easy to do.

Here are a few ideas to help transform your house into an autumnal wonderland, with some spooky touches ready for 31st October.

Enjoy the season by taking it outside

After spending all summer outside, our natural instinct is to hunker down for the colder months and cosy up inside. But the autumn season is absolutely stunning – all those deep reds, warm browns, flashes of green and touches of orange make for beautiful seasonal interiors.

Here are some ways you can extend your autumnal decorating outside, decorating your house for Halloween, even when the weather’s not on your side.

Consider an autumnal wreath

The easiest way to give your home that seasonal vibe is to dress up your front door. A leaf wreath is easy to make – collect fallen leaves, sprigs of berries, acorns and pine cones in all shapes and sizes, then use a glue gun to secure them to a plastic wreath circle and hang from your door.

You could also add a Halloween touch to your autumnal wreath by nestling mini pumpkins amongst the leaves, or cutting bat shapes from black foam sheets and sticking them across your front door.

Pick a pumpkin or two

Pumpkin picking is a fun activity for all the family – see if there’s a farm local to you offering pumpkin picking, and pay a visit to choose some for your home.

Gather a range of shapes, sizes and colours then dot them around your door, trailing up steps and sitting in clusters. Closer to Halloween you can carve a couple and pop tealights inside to entice trick or treaters.

Welcome trick or treaters with a new door mat

If your house is a hot spot for Halloween trick or treaters, dressing up your door is a great way to make their visit memorable… but don’t forget the door mat!

This spooky eye style will look fab alongside your carved pumpkins, while this black cat design is cute enough for everyday but bang on trend for Halloween too.

Bring the outdoors in with autumnal shades

It might be a bit cold to sit in your garden right now… how about bringing the outdoors in? Cosy interiors are often inspired by the colours of the autumn season, and thicker, warmer fabrics will reflect that chilly weather.

Look out for rich jewel tones and warm natural prints alongside sumptuous fabrics like velvet, and corduroy.

Here are some ideas to bring the great outdoors in, decorating your home for autumn.

Switch out your soft furnishings

Invest in new cushion covers in shades like mustard yellow, rustic orange and forest green to reflect the colour of the changing leaves outside.

We love this tasselled style while this textured green design has a cosy vintage vibe.

Look out for nature-inspired statement prints in similar deep colours, like this dusky floral print bedding.

Heavy curtains can also give your space that cossetted feel, and we love this brown pair with beautiful branch detail.

Light up your nights with candles

Those long winter nights can feel pretty gloomy, so candles are a must to keep your home bathed in soft, low light even on the darkest of days.

Look for scents based around nature to bring that outdoor feel in – like this cinnamon, clove and spiced apple candle, which will remind you of festive markets every time you take a sniff. And to transport you straight to bonfire night, we love this wood smoke and leather scent.

Accessorise with autumn florals

A fall flower arrangement is a quick and easy way to add autumnal colours to any room – look out for bunches of dahlias and ranunculus at your local florist and mix them with branches and berry sprigs from your garden.

This textured brown glass jar is the perfect place to display your autumnal blooms.

Set the scene at your dinner table

Using your dining table as a base, you can create all sorts of centrepieces to continue your autumnal theme – gather together small squashes, gourds and pumpkins to add colour and interest to the table… you could even paint some of them with gold detailing!

Display branches and berries in tall vases, and throw sheepskin rugs over the back of dining chairs to create a cosy seating area.

Mix up the textures – faux fur next to wool, rich red plaids and sumptuous green velvet – to really capture that autumnal feel.

A runner is a great way to add detail without covering up the natural wood of a dining table – we love the deep tones of this floral version.

Go for a tonal look by matching your crockery with these deep blue bowls, or pick out the statement shades with a set of brown stoneware plates.

Give your fireplace a macabre makeover

As we get closer to Halloween, adding spooky touches around the fireplace is a chic and easy way to decorate without resorting to hanging skeletons and plastic spiders.

Start by gathering fallen leaves and leave them to dry in a warm spot for a few days. Once they’re crisp, use them to line your mantlepiece and dot in a few conkers and mini pumpkins. Drape some fake cobwebs across the top, and if you really can’t resist – this is a good spot for those plastic spiders!

Add tall, gothic candleholders with tapered church candles inside. Bigger carved pumpkins can sit on the hearth, and you could add another flurry of bats across your chimney breast.

Now you’ve created those autumnal vibes (with a touch of Halloween spook) in your home, all that’s left to do is curl up with a good book and a cup of tea to enjoy the season.
