Decorating for Christmas - Keeping it classy

We’re all for fully embracing the festive season. Mince pies, carolling, taking the kids to see Santa – bring it ALL on. We don’t even mind Christmas adverts in October. We’re totally here for celebrating Christmas however you want… even if that includes a six-foot flashing reindeer display on the roof, lit up like Blackpool Illuminations from 1st November.

However, if you prefer a slightly more subtle approach to the season of goodwill, we’ve got you covered. Decorating for Christmas doesn’t have to be an all singing, all dancing affair – take a look at our top tips and give your home a chic Christmas makeover… singing Santa optional.

Choose your theme

Giving your Christmas décor a specific theme will help keep it cohesive throughout your home – if you like the minimalist look, a Scandi theme could be the one for you, or why not go traditional with green and gold? Have a look on Pinterest for ideas and make a note of the colours and textures that are used to create the style.

Keep it tonal

Clashing Christmas colours can be a bit of an assault on the eyes – it’s tempting to go all out with red, green, gold, silver, a bit of blue thrown in for good measure and a sprinkling of glitter on top. Stop right there! Choose a colour palette of three shades – green, red and gold, or blue, grey and silver, for example – and stick to it.

Go for soft white lights

Flashing rainbow lights are great for Christmas parties, but they’re totally distracting in your living room when you’re trying to watch Love Actually for the 20th time this year. Soft white lights on your tree are understated and elegant – perfect for a chic Christmas home. .

Think about texture

A great way to add festive cheer to your home without going overboard is to mix in some sumptuous textures. Think rich velvet cushions in jewel tones, hessian fabrics around the bottom of your tree, chunky knitted blankets and silky ribbon draped from branches.

Bring the outdoors in

The Christmas tree is often the focal point of any festive décor, but you can add other green touches around your home to bring the spirit of winter inside. Try sprigs of holly (with berries in tact) in short vases, or long strings of ivy along your mantelpiece. Mistletoe hanging above doorways is a classic, while eucalyptus bunches will add a fresh touch to your festive floral displays.
