How to live the Simple Life

When it comes to reducing stress, managing the work/life balance and keeping on top of your to do list, there’s one thing you need to remember: keep it simple. Unnecessary complications lead to delays, difficulties and dropped balls, so we’re all about streamlining life as much as possible.

12th July is National Simplicity Day and we’re celebrating in a very low-key manner, with five top tips for keeping life simple. Enjoy!

Simplify your style

Rather than having a wardrobe bursting with options – and spending half an hour every morning wading through them all – why not go minimal with a capsule collection of your favourite pieces? Work out what you love to wear, donate the things you don’t and reduce the time it takes to get dress without compromising on style.

De-stress dinnertimes

Meal planning, food shopping, prepping, cooking – it all takes a lot of time and energy. Rather than trying to shoehorn elaborate meals and exotic ingredients into your evenings, take a simpler approach in the kitchen with straightforward meals that don’t eat into your downtime. If you love cooking up a storm, save those more magnificent meals for the weekend when you have time to spare.

Turn on auto-payments

It sounds obvious, but using automatic payments wherever possible will take a big chunk of the mental load off your shoulders. You’ve probably got a direct debit set up for your gas and electricity, but what about your water? When you run out of dishwasher tablets or want to reorder your coffee subscription or need to pay the window cleaner… could all those things be paid for automatically? Look into it, you’ll be surprised how much can be automated these days!

Stop the scrolling

One of the quickest and easiest ways to live a more simple life is to limit your exposure to social media. If you have multiple streams of information beeping at you all day every day, the feeling of overwhelm can be intense. Try a social media cut off time each evening, where you put down your phone and don’t pick it up till morning. Or if that’s too big a step, turn off notifications for the night, or limit your scrolling to one platform only. Simplifying those information sources will really help.

Work out what you value

Enjoying the Simple Life does mean missing out on things – if you want to life more minimally, that means you can’t experience every single thing. To stop the FOMO from creeping in, take some time to work out what you really value in life – do you enjoy taking that extra time to cook a nice meal, or would you be happy with a simple dish? Does catching up with Twitter every night make you feel connected, or is it overwhelming? Do you enjoy your daily yoga session, or would it be easier on your schedule if it was only three times a week? Ask these questions about your own activities and work out what sparks joy and what causes chaos, so you can simplify in a way that suits you.
