Creating a New Morning Routine

We know, getting out of bed in the morning is hard. But this year we’ve resolved to stop pressing snooze 3 times before we drag ourselves up and out. Research shows that a strong morning routine can decrease stress, help you feel more alert and increase organisation throughout the day. 
 
On top of that, it’s said that keeping the first 60 minutes of your day as predictable and consistent as possible throughout the week lessens your mental load, which is an important form of self-care. You’ll create space for yourself, be less likely to forget something, and you’ll have an increased chance of sticking to one of the commitments you’ve made to yourself for the new year – things like eating a more healthy breakfast, packing yourself lunch or being more punctual to your work or appointments. 
 
We’re beginning to think it might be worth losing that extra half hour of shut eye… here are the first steps you might want to take to start designing your own morning routine:
 

1. Set your alarm and stick to it

Imagine if you set your alarm for the time you actually want to get up? Start by trying not to press snooze and instead set your alarm for a time that gives you a comfortable amount of time to do the things you need and want to do before leaving for work. Try a daylight clock to help you ease into the morning. Simple hack: keep a reusable water bottle (https://www.laredoute.co.uk/psrch/psrch.aspx?kwrd=reusable%20water%20bottle&virtualsite=100#srt=noSorting) by your bed to make hydration your first priority of the day.


2. Set your agenda

Plan your routine ahead of time. No one wants to wrestle with the mental burden of not knowing whether to eat breakfast or shower first when they’re still half asleep! Decide what you need to do and when you’re going to do it. If you’re introducing something new, like meditation or a simple yoga routine, try “Habit Stacking” to heighten your chances of sticking with it. Instead of simply saying “I will meditate for 5 minutes every morning”, swap it for “I will meditate for 5 minutes every morning before I get dressed” to give yourself the best chance and lessen the mental load of where to fit it in.

3. Create a breakfast menu

Have some appealing breakfast options ready to go. This’ll take the stress out of deciding what to eat or running out of milk and having to roll with it off the cuff. It’ll pay you back in dividends! 


4. Set a leaving time and decide your first task

Just like your wake-up time, set a time to leave the house for a stress-free journey to wherever you need to be and stick to it. Decide on music to listen to before you go or pick a podcast or audiobook. Before you leave the house, try listing out your to-dos for the day and deciding what your first task will be once you get to work. Commit to it, and refer back to your list (mental, pen/paper or just in the Notes app on your phone) throughout the day.



Other ideas you might want to try in your morning routine:
  • 20 minutes of exercise – anything from slow stretching to a quick run!
  • Journalling – there’s evidence to show that getting your thoughts out can clear your head for the rest of the day
  • Reading – from checking the news to committing to a chapter of a book, it’s enriching and helps you take time out 
  • Time with loved ones – if you have kids or a partner, follow in Obama’s footsteps and commit to sitting down for breakfast with them
