Catching up with the La Redoute x Dulux competition winner

As thousands of Brits were told to stay at home last year, many of us acquired a new thirst for DIY, shaping our homes into more multi-functional spaces. Many of us raised paintbrushes to lift our spirits during the pandemic, developing a passion for brightening up what we had at home, with the people that we love.

Dulux found from a study of 2,000 correspondents, that not only do two out of five (39%) of Brits wish they were bolder with their colour choices, but 68% say that infamous lockdown projects boosted their DIY confidence.

With this in mind, we decided to partner up with paint experts, Dulux, to offer some décor direction to an individual in need. Two leading brands coming together to provide all the tools needed to transform a room in need of a makeover.

Over 5,000 of you came to the site to check it out, but it was the owner of Yap Woof Walkies, Megan Barker who took home the incredible prize.

A dream come true for the dog-walker

After buying her first property in March, Megan has been tackling one room at a time to make her house a home, often searching interior sites and social media for interior style ideas.

It is here where she found our competition, and after experiencing a DIY-dry spell, the opportunity couldn’t have come sooner. Balancing a renovation project in between her dog walking and pet care business, Megan admitted defeat, explaining, “Probably my biggest setback has been finding the motivation to carry on decorating.

I follow so many gorgeous home decor accounts on Instagram and it can get really disheartening when your house looks nothing like the ones that have inspired your vision and there's no end in sight.  I'd love some expert advice on how to make my vision become reality, I have so many ideas but don't have a clue where to start!”

25% of Brits yearn for a simple farmhouse style this year

It seems the appetite for the latest must-have interior trends is as strong as ever, with 25% of 5,150 entrants choosing Rustic Summer as their favourite.

Our winner added, “I want my home to be light and bright with a few pops of colour. I love the combination of sleek and modern with some more natural and rustic textures thrown in. I am also obsessed with houseplants so they will be featuring quite a lot.” On the top of her wish list sits the blue Laxore buffet sideboard and the Mosaique inlaid dining table for her kitchen and dining space, telling us, “I'll mostly be buying things for my dining room so I can finally have people over for dinner. At the moment it's an empty room with one coat of white paint over previously navy blue walls and a tiny, battered old table. So I'm really excited to see my vision for it come to life.”

Where do you get your interior inspiration from?

With 198k followers, the La Redoute Instagram page proves a go-to place for ideas and advice when accessorising your home.

When it comes to scrolling social media for influence, Megan is no exception, she adds, “Mostly accounts on Instagram and photos on Pinterest. I love @littlebristolterrace, @thatssogemma and @villa_pocket. I also love La Redoute's Instagram and seeing how other people have styled their products! I love the mixture of handwoven textures with soft pops of colour for that farmhouse feel.” Therefore she looks forward to receiving some advice from our exclusive partnership to help incorporate the perfect blend of Maximalism and Rustic Summer for her first home.

“That's the look I'm going for with my home, just with a slightly more modern and colourful twist.” adds Megan describing her vision.

Maximalism continues to reign as a popular trend for those that entered the competition, with 267 individuals wishing to add a pop of colour to their four walls. A bold and bright style, this trend combines animal prints, floral flourishes and clashing fabrics and designs to create a strong and bold statement.
You can see how @thatssogemma aka Gemma Gear, previously showed her love of exuberant interior style over on our hub where she shares how she styles the colourful maximalist trend.

57% need help utilising living space with the right furnishings and accessories

Automne Linen Tablecloth

2,888 entrants agreed that they need more when it comes to making a house a home, seeking advice on how to optimise the space with smarter features.
As open-plan living merges the functionalities of two rooms into one, it is crucial for novice designers to get their creations right. Megan is manifesting a colour scheme of navy and blush paint across her open-plan living and dining room, with a mixture of different dining chairs around the Mosaique dining table.

“I love the idea of having a mix of dining chairs with the table as the focal point of the room, woven runner and some clay and wooden accessories for the centrepiece.
I also have an old Edwardian bureau that I want to paint pink and upcycle into a drinks cabinet, but that's quite a daunting project for me!”

Along with the £2,000 toward La Redoute furnishings and accessories, Megan will receive a colour consultation with Dulux's colour expert, who will help Megan choose the perfect paint shade (for 1,000 entries, this was the biggest challenge!). Megan will also receive the 'Ultimate Prize Package', containing all the decorating tools needed to make her vision a reality.

We are looking forward to learning how Megan styles the rooms in question, and we noticed that Dulux’s Studio Colours host a collection of pastels and soft paints that are complemented well by our jute and woven textures.

When asked who Megan would be pulling in to help with the DIY, we expected that her pet kitten and fellow dogs would not be on the list.
Between her past times of yoga, cooking and long walks, she has eagerly prepped her parents to come and help transform her space, “I'll definitely be roping in the dream team of mum and dad to help, along with my boyfriend who doesn't seem to mind the monotony of painting and has been a big help.”
We look forward to seeing the end results and cannot wait to follow Megan on her reno-journey with the help of ourselves and Dulux.

Dawn Bannerman, Chief Commercial Officer at La Redoute said, “We are thrilled to partner with Dulux on this opportunity to bring the joy of colour to the home.

“Partnering with Dulux in this way creates a campaign that showcases the importance of our surroundings following the past two years where our homes have had to work so hard to sustain all our activity.”
